Omsan Logistics’ Railway Safety Management System (RSMS) certificate, which allows the company to operate the national railway lines of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure in Türkiye, has been extended for another 5 years. Omsan Logistics, the first private train operator in Turkey, has become the leader among private companies by increasing its share in transportation by railway, which is described as ‘green transportation’, to 15 percent in rail transportation in Türkiye last year.

Making a difference in the field of railway transportation, which has recently been described as ‘green transportation’, Omsan Logistics’ Railway Safety Management System (RSMS) certificate, which is mandatory to be obtained in order to operate trains in Turkey, has been extended for another 5 years.

RSMS, which is audited by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, is defined as the organizational structure that ensures the safe operation of all railway operators, allows the systematic determination of measures to reduce hazards and risks, and accordingly, continuously follows and revises the rules, instructions and processes.

“Our goal is to grow even more in rail transportation”

Cömert Varlık, General Manager of Omsan Logistics, reminded that they have determined a strategic growth area for themselves in railway transportation, which is at the center of the concept of ‘green transportation’, as one of the well-established players in the logistics sector. Stating that Omsan Logistics has gradually increased the weight of railway transportation in its service portfolio in recent years, Varlık said, “Last year, we have become the leader among private companies in rail transportation by performing 15 percent of the total rail transportation in Turkey. Today, we continue to serve our customers in this field with our fleet consisting of 15 locomotives and more than 400 wagons.”

Train transport reduces carbon emissions

Emphasizing that the projects contributing to the emission reduction, especially with the EU Green Deal, have gained great importance recently, Cömert Varlık indicated that they ensured a saving equivalent to a carbon emission that 2 million 220 thousand 154 trees can balance with the use of railway lines in its operations in 2021, according to the calculations made through the “Digital Carbon Footprint Calculation” application.

Noting that they will accelerate their investments especially in ‘green transportation’ in the coming period, Varlık said, “We are the first private train operator in Turkey to have a railway train operation authorization certificate. With this certificate we have received, we will continue to contribute to the expansion of railway transportation and to reduce carbon emission emissions in the coming years, and we will continue to benefit both our country and the world in terms of sustainability.”

RSMS certificate is given by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure for five years. Companies complying with the national/international regulations and procedures published by the Ministry are entitled to receive the RSMS certificate. The Ministry organizes inspections every year during the certificate period. During the audits, the missing points regarding RSMS are reported to the companies. In the next year, it is checked whether the missing points in the audits are completed.

Apart from the Republic of Turkey State Railways and İzmir Suburban System (İZBAN), only three private companies have RSMS.
